Exercising The Famous Zen Practice Of “Mind Like Water” That Awakens The All Powerful Silent God, And Cultivates Nonattachment
Every path of spiritual discipline worth exploring has fundamental similarities, things that are common and even identical, once you learn to take these paths out of the context of religion and return them to their proper places as symbolic maps of the span of human experience and potential.
One of these core, common principles is Nonattachment.
The idea of embracing emotional and psychic nonattachment as a means of self-liberation is found in just about every religious text, as well as being the most major teaching in the Magickal and Mystical spiritual paths.
For those of you who are working towards the full Mastery of your existence through practical spirituality, you’ve probably noticed that YOU are the one major obstacle to your success. If your magickal methods fail, it’s almost always because you were too attached to the outcome in some way or another. Cultivating a constant, and authentic, state of nonattachment would allow a Godlike ability to calmly take the reins of reality and guide it towards your own self-realized Destiny.
At its most basic, nonattachment manifests as a calm approach to every situation, whether absurd, touching, arousing, chaotic, or threatening – these are all equal All events are merely Observed by the Master, not engaged in in any internal way. If action needs to be taken, it can be executed without wrapping the emotions around any part of the process, but remaining an objective observer of reality rather than a slave to it.
This sort of contemplation running in the background of the consciousness on an ongoing basis establishes you as the unmoved center of existence, all things shifting and changing around you, in the periphery of your silent, calm, and focused power.
The Secret To Embodying The All Powerful Silent God
Most people recognize how potent REALLY attaining internal nonattachment could be… but struggle with actually embodying the All Powerful Silent God.
I can just about guarantee that if you’re struggling with nonattachment, it’s because you’re trying too hard. This much is obvious, since nonattachment is indeed the absence of all struggle. Even in work, in suffering, in play, and in battle, the Adept does not connect emotionally or psychically with any current, past, or projected event. Instead, he is fully present in the present, fully engaged with The Vision that he is materializing in his reality.
I’ve recently come across a particular analogy in a few different places recently, and it seems perfectly suited to the task of cultivating nonattachment.
This is the Zen idea of having a “Mind Like Water.” Water is adaptive in ways that, if you watch with a meditative mind, will teach you more about spiritual presence than any guru ever could. Water flows around obstacles when it’s able, but if needed can crumble mountains in order to rise. If needed, water will wait for centuries, silently and without any announcement corroding its obstacles. Water will even transmute itself into another state entirely, being lifted into the heavens, only to summon itself back into existence anywhere that it chooses.
When you attempt to disturb water, all of the effort is on the shoulders of the aggressor, as water simply moves out of the way. Water will only react to each stimulus as much as is required to resolve it, and then it will settle back into tranquility.
The mystical, Zen practice of developing a Mind Like Water can potentially trigger more authentic and more realistically achievable states of nonattachment. Become like water, in all of its serenity and in all of its wrath, and you will find that you become the unmoving center of an ever-changing kaleidoscope of events.
Knowing what is at the root of each situation in your life, and being able to accurately discern what lies in wait on your path ahead is crucial not only to your spiritual Ascent, but also to your ability to manage your life with a level of proficiency that most people just don’t have access to.
